In today’s world the incandescent lights are fading away slowly and many people are looking for energy saving bulbs. The energy-efficient light bulbs will not only save you energy but also money. There are different type of energy saving lights that you can choose from; the two major ones being the CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lights) LED (Light emitting Diodes).

What Are CFL And LED Lights?

Before you can proceed to buy either of these lights, it is important to understand what these lights are and their differences. The CFL lights have been designed in such a way that they use only a fifth or a third of the electric power. They also last longer than the Incandescent light. The LED light on the other hand releases light through a semi-conductor material which then causes the electrons to emit power.

Differences Between The Two Lights

1.    Life span

The strength of the lights is determined by the number of watts. An LED light with an equivalent of a 60 watt bulb can last for 50,000 hours while the CFL lights can last for around 8,000. The difference is brought about by the fact that the LED lights usually use less power per unit generated. If used in the grow room or the greenhouse, the LED lights significantly reduces the greenhouse gas emissions.

2.    Environmental Impact

It has been reported that the CFL lights do have traces of mercury that may cause harm to the body and the environment in general. The LED lights do not contain mercury and they are RoHS compliant. It is important to note that lower energy consumption as- evidence of the LED light, decreases Carbon Dioxide emissions and sulfur dioxide.

3.    Temperature Sensitivity

The different light bulbs do have different reactions to the changes in temperature. The LED lights are not affected by the low temperatures. This means that they can still work under -10 degrees. The CFL lights on the other hand, are sensitive to low temperatures, you cannot use them under the same temperature or over 120 degrees. The LED lights are also not sensitive to humidity unlike the CFL.

4.    Durability

The durability of the lights differs. For example the LED lights are very durable and they can handle bumping. The CFL lights are made of glass and they can break easily if not handled with care. The turning on the CFL and turning them off quickly may decrease the lifespan. Due to the design, the CFL lights do not turn on instantly when switched on, they take a few seconds to warm up.

Advantages of CFL vs LED Grow Lights

LED Lights

  • LED lights are long lasting
  • They are cost effective
  • Mercury free
  • Cool as they do not cause any heat build up

CFL Lights

  • Efficient
  • They are less expensive
  • Reduces air and water pollution
  • Versatile as they can be used anywhere

Disadvantages of CFL vs LED Grow Lights

LED Lights

  • They are not suitable for table lamps
  • Many are more expensive than the CFL lights

CFL Lights

  • They contain mercury that may be harmful

Now that you know the differences, it is time for you to choose the company that you are going to buy the lights from. There are many different companies that deal with these grow lights. Among all of the companies listed, Budmaster LED is one of the best companies.
